The word ‘liminal’ derives from the Latin root limen, which means threshold.

ABOA Cultural Price 2020 recipient Maria Nurmela has been working as a freelance dance artist since 2002 at the field of contemporary dance and performance. Maria ́s works have been presented in various Festivals in Finland and abroad in prestigious venues such as Critical Path Sydney (2019) and Palais de Tokyo Museum Paris (2018) among many others. Her work often take place on interdisciplinary interfaces and in different performance spaces, communally and in film format. Maria’s artistry has been recognized by numerous grants and awards. In year 2008 she was nominated n Ballet/Tanz Year Book as one of the most remarkable female contemporary dancers in Europe. Many internationally esteemed choreographers such as Tero Saarinen (Maria was part of Tero Saarinen Company during years 2002-2017), Susanna Leinonen and Susanne Linke have employed Maria in their works. In year 2018 Maria initiated The Days Project www.thedaysproject.com with her colleagues, Finnish dancer Ville Oinonen and English choreographer Theo Clinkard. Clinkard´s first ever duet work The Days created especially for Nurmela and Oinonen  has been since then  touring in Finland, Europe and Russia with for ex Dance House Finland touring support.  In addition to her work as a choreographer and a freelance dancer, she also teaches in different institutions such as Theatre Academy of University of Arts in Helsinki and Helsinki Summer University. www.marianurmela.com
