'Field Study' – Grännäs, Nauvo, Finland July 17th, 2011

 

The heat was on for the summer of 2011 in Finland. Temperatures were extraordinary high, especially for the month of July. I spent a lot of time with my family in the archipelago and stayed cool by swimming in the Baltic. I did a lot of running in the shade of the forest along the nature paths instead of roads. Here are some of my favorite photographs of the summer.

Exciting times! My first photography exhibit on Finnish soil opens tomorrow in Forum shopping center in Turku.

In February 2011 I spent a week in Saariselkä, Lapland, Finland. The light there is exceptional due to its northern location and terrain. The weather was arctic the entire week, but other than having a ton of warm clothing on me, it didn’t pose a problem even for the camera.

As I prepare for my photography trips this winter in the archipelago and Lapland, I wanted to post some photos from last winter. In March of 2010 I had a unique chance to ski around the archipelago sea of Finland. It was unique because the conditions were such that I could go anywhere with my skis.  The ice was strong and the snow on top of the ice was either blown away or was hard enought that skiing on top of it was easy. This year it has been frozen too, but it is very unpredictable, so I’m staying away from the ice and just ski & snowshoe on the islands. These photos were taken during two skiing trips over the weekend. The weather was cold (-15C/6F), but sunny.
  

One of 20000 or so islands in the archipelago sea. The exact number of islands depends on the definition of the term "island". There are about a hundred big islands (bigger than 1 square kilometer), but thousands of smaller patches of dry land.

'Les Larmes de L'hiver – Tears of Winter' – I skied past this small patch of ice (1 meter) lurking under the snow on the shoreline.The ice patch had started to melt a bit under the March sun and the vegetation and soil that colored the ice, created colorful tears in the snow.

As I was heading for my second trip on Sunday morning – I spotted some great tones of color across the field.

The islands were mostly shaped by glacial action during the last Ice Age, between 10,000 to 24,000 years ago.

Shapes created by sun and reeds. What a memorable weekend this was on the islands and ice of the archipelago. These places, shapes and formations truly captured my heart as I captured them in my photographs.
